The Republic of the Sphere: Peace, Disarmament, and a New Order
The Republic of the Sphere emerged from the wreckage of the Jihad as Devlin Stone’s attempt to prevent the old cycle of dynastic war from immediately returning to Terra. This episode examines the Republic Formation Treaty, territorial cessions by exhausted neighboring powers, reconstruction of former Protectorate worlds, and Stone’s unusually comprehensive approach to peace. The new state bought back private BattleMechs, restricted heavy weapons, relocated populations, linked citizenship to service, and built institutions intended to weaken older House and Clan loyalties. For decades, Stone’s Peace was more than propaganda: trade stabilized, civilian industry recovered, former enemies served together, and many children grew up without repeated invasions. The price was a strong central government with broad military authority, a weak Senate, conditional citizenship, compulsory resettlement in some cases, and intrusive controls over private force. The Republic succeeded because its program touched nearly every part of society—and became vulnerable because so much depended on those central institutions continuing to function.
