The Blakist Protectorate: Terra, Politics, and a Secret Army
The Blakist Protectorate did not appear overnight as an inexplicable religious empire. It grew from Terra, HPG revenues, Free Worlds League connections, captured infrastructure, vulnerable frontier governments, secret military programs, and years of administrative preparation. This episode explains how the Word of Blake transformed control of humanity’s birthworld into a territorial state surrounded by worlds that provided taxes, workers, industry, militias, and strategic depth. Some populations experienced repaired infrastructure, employment, dependable communications, and protection from raiders; others faced occupation, censorship, disappearances, coerced political change, and recruitment into locally raised forces. Behind the public institutions stood a military establishment whose full scale was deliberately hidden, including secret fleets and specialized formations beyond normal political oversight. The Protectorate’s secrecy made surprise possible, but it also allowed rival Blakist chains of command to accumulate power without an effective mechanism for debating where that power should be used.
